The discipline of Government and Public Administration is a systemic study of political phenomena. Since its establishment in 1970, our Programme has been committed to excellence in teaching and research. Today it is one of the most well established Programmes in its discipline in Hong Kong. With our faculty members coming from diverse backgrounds and specialising in a wide range of areas, our Programme provides not only a rich curriculum but also an exciting place to learn and to grow intellectually.

Programme
This is a research-type programme leading to the degree of MPhil or PhD in Government and Public Administration. Students admitted to the MPhil stream and PhD stream will take the same courses, but with higher requirement for PhD students. MPhil students with outstanding results may apply for transferral to the PhD stream, whereas PhD students performing unsatisfactorily will be transferred to the MPhil stream. The programme thus provides flexibility for conversion between the two streams.
The programme will give priority to PhD applications. Applicants without a master’s degree can apply for the PhD stream directly.

Admission Requirements
Please refer to the general qualification required for admission to the Graduate School.
All applicants for the MPhil and PhD Streams are required to submit a two- or three-page statement of purpose to elaborate on their research interests and identify potential supervisors.
Applicants for the PhD Stream are also required to submit a writing sample such as a master thesis or a research paper, and a research proposal (3-5 pages).
