Exploring Innovation and Sustainability: Global Studies Programme Field Trip to The Netherlands

11 Mar 2025

From February 28 to March 9, 2025, the Global Studies Programme of the School of Governance and Policy Science went beyond the classroom and embarked on an enriching field trip to the Netherlands. This tour was organized and led by Dr. Hung Wing Lok, Lecturer of the Global Studies Programme, alongside Mr. Tom Bakker, General Manager of the Dutch Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.

The trip provided students with an invaluable opportunity to explore the Netherlands through the lens of “Innovation and Sustainability.” Participants engaged with a diverse range of corporations and institutions, gaining firsthand insights into the country’s cutting-edge advancements in innovative and sustainable business, governance, and development. Highlights included visits to the ING headquarters, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, the Port of Rotterdam and interactive discussions with scholars, industry experts, and policymakers.

Beyond corporate and institutional visits, students delved into the Netherlands’ role as the political and legal center of the European Union. They had the privilege of visiting the International Criminal Court, where they learned about international justice and human rights. Additionally, they attended an insightful lecture at the Leiden Asia Center and had discussions with international relations scholars, broadening their understanding of the Netherlands’ global geopolitical significance and the recent trend of China-EU-US relations under the Trump administration.

Cultural immersion was also a key component of the trip. Students explored the uniqueness of Amsterdam’s waterways through a canal tour. They also learnt about Dutch history and traditions through visits to iconic sites such as Kinderdijk and Zaanse Schans, where they observed traditional windmills and craftsmanship; the Heineken Museum, which offered a glimpse into the Dutch business culture; and the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, home to masterpieces of Dutch art and heritage.

This field trip was a remarkable opportunity for students to bridge academic knowledge with real-world applications. Through engaging discussions, institutional visits, and cultural experiences, students not only expanded their academic horizons but also developed a greater appreciation for the Netherlands’ innovative and sustainable endeavours. Our students expressed that this experience enriched their understanding of global governance, sustainable development, and cultural diversity, leaving a lasting impact on their academic and personal growth.
