Message from School Director

It is my honor to welcome you to the School of Governance and Policy Science (SGPS) at CUHK.

SGPS is a multidisciplinary endeavour to bring together students and researchers who aim to better understand and make a difference in our fast-changing world. Under the umbrella of the School and the Faculty of Social Science, we host a wide range of outstanding scholars and programmes, each featuring their own intellectual and methodological identities while seeking to answer questions of global significance.

Both the content of our teaching and the research undertaken at SGPS reflect the fast tempo of changes at the global and local levels that are reshaping governance, public policy, as well as domestic and international politics.

Given Hong Kong’s unique role in greater China and Asia, many SGPS scholars have extensive experience in the region as well as in China studies. At the same time, the global environment structured by states, international organizations, firms and citizens is critical to our understanding of how various facets of local and global governance evolve and interact with one another. We therefore welcome scholars who have broad interests and have developed research agendas that are not necessarily nested within specific geographic areas.

Our methodologically diverse team recognizes the value of multi-method and multidisciplinary work for the advancement of the social sciences. We strive to provide students with a range of analytical skills to help them engage the contemporary world effectively, combining emotional with empirical intelligence, ranging from field research to big data analytics.

The degree programmes under SGPS reflect this intellectual and methodological diversity. At the undergraduate level, we offer degrees in Data Science and Policy Studies (DSPS), Global Studies (GLSD) as well as Government and Public Administration (GPAD). We offer taught master’s degrees on Global Political Economy (MGPE), Government and Politics (Greater China) (GPGC), as well as Public Policy (MPUP). Finally, we admit MPhil and PhD students on Government and Public Administration.

I encourage you to explore these programmes, as well as the information about our teaching and research staff by navigating through this website and following SGPS on social media.

Happy browsing!
